Me too, having come from a SunOS & Solaris background.  Same for
/opt for the LSB stuff.

These make Xastir jump through all kinds of hoops depending on who's
installing it and why.

Lee just pointed out something to me that I'm going to check out yet
WRT to the geotiff stuff.  It won't help the problem we just
discussed but will help another.
