Thanks Peter.

Forgot to mention that I'm running Windows XP Pro as host and Ubuntu 
9.10 as guest in VirtualBox.  My problem was that COM1 was 
"disconnected" in VirtualBox.  After selecting host device as COM1, 
Xastir started working.
