Utilizing a GPU for general purpose computing (aka GPGPU) is non trivial. There is not yet a mature cross platform method of utilizing a GPU; once that is available, the thousands of lines of code in the dozens of support packages that xastir relies on will need to be rewritten to include calls to the as yet nonexistent API. 

You kinda make it sound like someone forgot to add a "--useGPU" flag on the compile command, but it's not quite that simple...
