BTW, it is important to remember that things like UIDIGI, DIGIPEATER, and
UITRACE are persistent settings in the D700 TNC, and if you add those things
to your Xastir start-up file, you will likely mislead yourself into thinking
that removing those lines from the startup file is sufficient to clear the
settings. It will not be, and your first setting of UIDIGI will persist
across power cyclies until you explicitly clear it. This cannot be cleared
from the front panel, either --- you gotta set it through the serial port.
It is usually recommended to set these parameters in a terminal program like
minicom rather than add them to the Xastir startup file, and then undo those
settings again the same way after you're finished with your event.
Look at the Xastir tnc-startup.d700 file to see how we set up D700s on a
normal basis --- there are a lot of extra D700-specific control codes in
there (like TC1 and TC0 to put the TNC into and out of terminal control, GU
to turn on and off the GPS, and some settings to change the D700 from APRS
to PKT mode and back). Some of those things are strictly necessary to avoid
locking up the D700 (usually only happens if a GPS is attached). Some can be
stripped out if you don't need them (like the ones pertaining to GPS, as you
already noticed).
At any rate, use minicom to connect to the D700 TNC, set UIDIGI and DIGIPEATER,
do your event with a normal D700 startup file (or your own truncated one),
and then use minicom to clear UIDIGI when you're done.
