hi all,

Sorry for the mostly off topic post, but I'd rather start this
conversation is this smaller, saner audience. :)

I am the customer for a computer engineering senior design team. The
project is to create a SAME (weather radio, Specific Area Message
Encoding) to APRS gateway. The goal of the project is to use either a
modem connected to a receiver the NWR frequency or a digital receiver
such as the SI4707 ( http://www.sparkfun.com/products/11129 ) to
receive and decode the SAME messages transmitted by NWS. This data
will be presented on a serial port digitally in the form of
corresponding APRS WX packets (position reports, objects, messages,
etc).

A requirement for this project is for the results to be open source.
I have a strong preference for the hardware to be arduino compatible,
but I haven't yet made that a requirement.

Acceptance testing will be in the form of connecting the device to
xastir as a TNC, and verifying that the data is represented correctly.

I may be making a mistake here, as I haven't used APRS NWS data all
that much since Dale's server went offline a few years ago. Part of
my motivation for this project is to get some functionality back, if
possible. The primary driver is to have APRS display of NWS data in
the absence of internet connectivity.

If you have suggestions, recommendations, or would like to be part of
the customer team (which is me at the moment), please let me know.
