Wow, I had more or less resigned myself to wrestling with soundmodem
because it's the only thing that I could find that appeared to do
soundcard TNC duty. Your link above was an eye-opener. I downloaded and
compiled direwolf and as soon as I ran it, the packets started pouring
in. Thanks a million for the help!

Now, the only thing I have left to get working is my PTT circuit so that
I can actually transmit packets. I have a homebrew interface that
isolates the laptop's audio input, output, and serial connections with
some 1:1 transformers and an optoisolator, but there's no serial port on
the laptop I'm using. I have a USB-to-serial adapter, but I have to
figure out how to get it going with my Slackware system. Right now, when
I have it hooked up, it keys the PTT "permanently" when direwolf is
running. I have to poke around a bit more with direwolf's configuration
file and with the way the connectors in my interface are constructed,
but I may be starting a new thread soon :-)
