That's probably because all that differs between the files is some values of
attributes --- they're all just point data, is my guess.

So the "multifunction" dbfawk is probably just an exercise in making
dbfawk rules for different point types, and you just need to figure out
what types are present in each file.

Well, that isn't actually all that hard, but is an exercise in getting the 
digital elevation model data (e.g. from http://www.geocomm.com/) and contouring
it (e.g. with "gdal_contour").  It can be a pain to create, but can be done if
you take time to understand how the tools work.  And of course generate a 
dbfawk to go with the results...

I've done it a bunch in order to make custom backcountry skiing GPS maps for my 
Garmin GPSMAP 60cs handheld GPS without having to pay Garmin for the ones of 
which they're so very, very proud (i.e. $$$).
