These seem to be fairly complete and are updated often. Gives you another
offline map option for OSM maps.

The initial support for geofabrik.de maps in Xastir's dbfawk files is for
"roads" and "waterways".

Xastir displays "buildings", "landuse", "natural", and "railways" as well,
but there aren't any dbfawk files for them yet so no labels, changes on
zoom level, colors etc for those. As far as "places" and "points": Without
labels they are useless.

What the maps are missing: Lakes and land masses. Here's what I did to make
a nice map stackup with offline maps:

*) Use the county Shapefile set from the weather alerts as the land mass.
In my case "c_05ap16". I just made a link from my map directory back to the
"/usr/local/share/xastir/Counties" directory where the weather alert maps
reside, then reindexed maps and those files show up in the Map Chooser.

*) Use "lk17de98" for the lakes. Don't remember where I got it but I have
it in maps/World/USA/ directory along with a bunch of USA-wide maps.

*) Enable "buildings", "landuse", "roadways", "roads", and "waterways" from
the geofabrik.de maps

*) Click on Map Chooser->Properties. Set layer for "lk17de98.shp" to 999
and for "c_05ap16" to 998. This makes the land get drawn first, then the
lakes, then the geofabrik.de maps.

*) Map -> Configure -> Background Color -> Navy Blue

Now you'll see ocean with land masses drawn on top, lakes on top of that,
then the other features drawn on top of that. Looks good and pans/zooms
fast 'cuz they're all vector maps.

There's a lot that can be (and should be) done yet with the dbfawk files
for geofabrik.de maps. I did the minimum tweaks to make them start working
in Xastir. Most of the lines in there are original lines from the files I
copied to make them, so those lines don't apply to the geofabrik.de maps.
