Some you can, some you can't. Something important to note is that, with
online maps, the way the server is accessed varies, so there is
server-specific code in xastir to deal with them.  This is another reason
why you need to update to the latest version of the code to get the latest
online maps maps servers come and go, and code is written to take advantage
of the new servers.

FYI the xastir team does not provide binary packages for any distro (and I
don't blame them, there are too many), which leads to some fairly old
xastir version in distribution channels.  Your best bet is to build from
source.  There are very good build instructions on the wiki, and it's
pretty straightforward (cut and paste) if you have a mainstream distro
(ubuntu, etc).  once you have a build it's really easy to update.  unlike
many open source projects, xastir is very solid - checking out the current
working source version for your production system is not insane.
