OK, that gives us a better picture of your setup, and validates my guess.

Is there any text before or after the "can't open display" message?

Are you running xastir from the command line in a terminal window, or from
a script/GUI menu entry/etc?

Can you open other graphical applications?

If you can open a terminal window, try running xastir from the command line
and hopefully there will be more information to tell us what's happening.
